How to Price Your NIL Deals and Sponsored Posts

6 min read

The most common question athletes ask after "how do I get a deal?" is "how much should I charge?" Price too high and brands walk; price too low and you leave money on the table and devalue every athlete after you.

This guide gives you real benchmarks and a simple framework to set rates with confidence.

The baseline benchmark

A widely used starting point for a single sponsored social post is roughly $10 per 1,000 followers. So an athlete with 15,000 followers might start around $150 per post.

This is a floor, not a ceiling. It is the anchor you adjust up or down based on the factors below.

What moves your price up

  • High engagement rate (above ~4–5% is strong)
  • A niche, loyal, or local audience a brand specifically wants
  • Exclusivity (you agree not to work with competitors)
  • Usage rights (the brand wants to reuse your content in ads)
  • Multiple deliverables bundled into a package
  • Fast turnaround or tight deadlines

What moves your price down

  • Low engagement relative to follower count
  • A one-off post with no exclusivity or usage rights
  • Your first deals, where building a portfolio has value
  • Trade arrangements where you also receive product

Pricing beyond a single post

Not every deal is one post. Here is how to think about other formats:

  • Stories: typically priced lower than a permanent feed post
  • Packages: bundle posts + stories at a small discount to raise total deal value
  • Appearances: charge an hourly or flat rate that covers your time and travel
  • Long-term ambassador deals: monthly retainer for a set number of posts

Do not forget taxes when you quote

Remember that 25–30% of whatever you charge will go to taxes, since NIL income is self-employment income. Factor that in so your take-home matches your expectations.

NILvault's Tax Estimator can show you the after-tax value of any deal before you accept it.

When a brand asks your rate, give a confident number and a short reason ("my engagement runs around 7%, so my rate for two posts is $X"). Confidence and data win negotiations.
